Library announces reduction in hours of operation

Grand Island, Nebr.— The Grand Island Public Library board of trustees has approved the following changes to the library’s schedule, effective Monday, April 24.

            -Monday–Thursday                9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (was 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.)

            -Friday                                    9:30 am to 6 p.m. (was 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

            -Saturday                                9:30 am to 5 p.m. (was 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

            -Sunday                                  1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (no change)

According to Library Director Steve Fosselman, the reduction in hours is necessary due to 1.5 full-time equivalents in library positions that have been left unfilled in anticipation of budget cuts. “These schedule changes are being made at this time,” Fosselman explains, “so staff can get ready for the summer reading programs.”

Fosselman went on to say, “The Library Board reviewed current patterns of use and previous reductions in hours to determine the new schedule. The library realizes every cut in the operation schedule means less access to all the learning opportunities the library provides. It is the library’s hope that at this time of budget shortfalls, the library is able to provide the best services possible with the current staffing levels. This means adequate coverage of the service desks, staff time needed for background tasks and program planning, and time for effective coordination of staff team efforts.”

The library’s schedule is now year-round and will not change further during the summer.
