Adams Street paving project update

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The City of Grand Island Public Works Department announces progress on the Adams Street roadway improvement project. The roadway paving is now complete with only small sections of sidewalk and some colored pavement in the roundabout islands remaining. Fine grading and roadway pavement markings will be installed in the following weeks. The signal at Stolley Park Road and Adams Street will flash yellow for Stolley Park Road traffic and flash red for Adams Street traffic at least one week prior to the opening of Adams Street which is tentatively scheduled around Aug. 1.

Hall County School District 2, also known as Grand Island Public Schools (GIPS), is constructing a new Starr Elementary School and additions to Barr Middle School. Upon completion of the construction projects, it is anticipated increased pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic will be present on and near Adams Street between Barr Middle School and the new Starr Elementary School.

The Adams Street Paving Project consists of removing approximately 1250 feet of existing Adams Street roadway north of Stolley Park Road and replacing with concrete pavement. The project consists of widening the roadway from 24 feet to 37 feet for a three-lane section of roadway with improved drainage and elimination of the ditch section. An extension of trail and sidewalks will also be constructed. Furthermore, Grand Island’s first roundabout will be installed at the Starr and Barr entrances to Adams Street to promote safe pedestrian and vehicle traffic. A traffic signal at the intersection of Adams Street and Stolley Park Road will also be included as part this project.

The Adams Street paving project was made possible by a June 14, 2016, interlocal agreement between the City of Grand Island and GIPS. Diamond Engineering was awarded the construction contract on December 13, 2016. The total current construction cost of the project is $1,050,993.15 which will be split by the City of Grand Island and GIPS.
