City of Grand Island Utilities Department crews to assist in Hurricane Irma recovery work

Grand Island, Neb.— The City of Grand Island Utilities Department (GIUD) is responding to a mutual aid request from the Florida Municipal Electric Association through the American Public Power Association for assistance in the anticipated recovery work from Hurricane Irma.

Four line workers and two utility trucks will travel with crews from the Lincoln Electric System and Loup Public Power District. The crews plan to leave Saturday morning in order to be in a pre-staging location in Tallahassee by Monday morning.  Based on the actual storm damage, the crews will be assigned to public power communities in Florida.  It is anticipated the crews could be working in Florida for up to two weeks. If damage recovery efforts continue longer than that, the crews will be relieved by other GIUD employees.

Mutual aid agreements allow for outside utilities to assist with local utilities in major disasters like wind and ice storms, with reimbursement for expenses by the local entity.

Utilities Director Tim Luchsinger said, “We appreciate the opportunity to assist our fellow public power partners. We hope we don’t ever need it, but we know they would do the same for us. Right now our efforts are focused on getting our crews down there and making sure they have everything they need to do the job and return safely.”
