What hours will the Police Department use the Community Connection Center?

Officers have access to the building  24/7. They come and go throughout the day.

Why is the Library adding a Police Department Community Connection Center to the Library?

The Library has wanted a Police Department substation for many, many years. We have seen other community organizations partner with the Police Department such as the Grand Island Public Schools, Mall, Airport, Central Nebraska Humane Society, and many other locations. The Library is centrally located in Grand Island with a high volume of traffic at all hours. The Library has wanted to have a security officer hired in past years but did not have the money in the budget.

Why is the Community Connection Center located right in the front of the Library?

The Library did not have any room for the center in the staff work areas or in other parts of the Library. The Police have easy access to their cars by being in the front lighted area. They only have access to the front foyer of the Library, the Police Substation office, and the restrooms. With the Police parking in the front area at night, this might help to deter crimes in the Library area. There is also a visible area looking out from the front glassed area. There are plans to add a kiosk for people to request help from the Police. If a person is in a situation where they need Police help, maybe they don’t have a phone, then this kiosk will be a resource. Of course, it is recommended if someone needs immediate help they should call 911.

Why does the Community Connection Center have windows that are tinted?

The Police will need to have privacy for their work that they do in the Community Connection Center. They update and work on confidential reports, and could also be interviewing or meeting with a person in that office.

What kind of community relationships do the Police have with the Library currently?

The Police currently are called to the Library for help by both staff and patrons for a variety of reasons, and during all hours of the day and night. The Police serve the community at the Library with respect and trust and help the Library to enforce the Library’s Code of Conduct Policies.

The Police partner with the Library for programming such as the Bear Fair, children’s programming, and other interagency collaborations to provide “A Library for Everyone” and this is part of our Library Strategic Plan. The Library serves a diverse population and we want all patrons to feel seen, safe and welcome at our Library.
