The Edith Abbott Memorial Library will host Plainview author Dennis Vossberg in Meeting Room A&B on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Vossberg will show slides and discuss his recently-released book, Santee Sorrow. The program will start at 10:00 A.M., is open to the public, and admission is free. Books will be available for purchase and for signing before and after the program.
Santee Sorrow is a carefully researched history of the Santee Sioux Tribe and how their Northeast Nebraska reservation came into being. The story is told through the eyes of a fictional, mixed-race young man who has left the reservation for economic and social advantages. Although appearing to be successful, he is deeply troubled by feelings of guilt over abandoning his heritage and family.
This is Vossberg’s second book. His first work was Hector's Bliss, Black Homesteaders at Goose Lake.
The program will also feature the entertaining and informative Plains Indian interpreter James Horn of Plainview. A mixed-race Osage from Oklahoma, James has given thousands of talks about Plains Indian history and culture starting when he was a U.S. Park Service employee at various locations throughout the Western United States. James, who appears in his hand-made Native attire, explains how he made his clothing and equipment, including fancy beadwork. He also shows some personal artifacts and punctures numerous myths and misunderstandings about Plains Indians.
