National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and Co-Sponsored locally by the Grand Island Police Department.
National Night Out is designed to: (1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participate in local anti-crime efforts; (3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships; and (4) send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
From 6 until 10 P.M. on August 1st, residents in neighborhoods throughout Grand Island and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and first responders.
Many neighborhoods participate in this event in each year. Some special events have included ice cream socials, the longest banana split in town, cookouts, parades, line dancing and a band.
This event is designed to help you get out to meet your neighbors and to interact with local first responders in casual setting.
Contact the street division of the Public Works Department to block off your street with barricades to make your event safe. Please fill out the Request for Street Closure at the City of Grand Island web page.
Again National Night Out is August 1st, 2023. Start planning now and watch for more information to follow at a later date.
