ReTree Nebraska meeting
Rain garden project planning
Grand Island, Neb. —A meeting will be held at the Edith Abbott Memorial Library, 211 North Washington Street, Grand Island on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 3:00 PM in Meeting Room B to discuss the benefits of rain gardens as waterwise landscaping. The public is invited to attend this meeting to learn more about the benefits of rain gardens as waterwise landscaping, costs to consider, and typical steps involved in planning, designing and installing. This is a follow-up to the City of Grand Island Greener Nebraska Towns grant and celebration of ReTree Nebraska Week, September 18-24,
Justin Evertson, Green Infrastructure Coordinator for the Nebraska Forest Service-Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, will be at the meeting, along with Library Director Steve Fosselman, to discuss a potential rain garden project at the library as part of the city’s Greener Nebraska Towns (GNT) initiative. Evertson will also explain more about ReTree Nebraska and Greener Nebraska Towns.
Up to $55,000 is available to the City of Grand Island for tree purchases/planting, waterwise landscaping, and related outreach and education. Through the grant, there must be implementation of at least one highly visible landscape enhancement effort that clearly demonstrates water conservation and wise stormwater management practices.
A rain garden includes native shrubs, perennials and flowers planted in a small depression to temporarily hold and soak in rain water off of a slope. These gardens help the property owner by reducing water consumption for landscape care , and help the entire community by reducing the amount of rain water and runoff contaminants entering storm drains.
A tree and stormwater educational display will be available at Edith Abbot Memorial Library, 211 N. Washington St., through the end of September. The September 26 meeting is expected to last about an hour. If you would like more information, please contact Steve Fosselman at 308-385-5333 or sf@gi.lib.ne.us.
