Community Book Discussion Program
"One Book One Nebraska" Read "Once Upon a Town" by Bob Greene
Across Nebraska, libraries, bookstores and reading clubs will be reading this year's "One Book One Nebraska" selection "Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen" by Bob Greene.
The community is invited to join the library's adult book club for a discussion of this wonderful "read" about the story of the people in and around North Platte, Nebraska during WWII. A simple gesture on Christmas Day 1941, grew into a major gift of love in the Union Pacific depot. Those, mostly women, met every single troop train passing through North Platte from that day in 1941 until beyond the end of the war. This tiny town, wanting to offer the servicemen warmth and support, transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen.
Later during the week, on Saturday June 7, from 2:00 -3:30 pm in Meeting Room ABC, at the Grand Island Public Library, join Rosalie Lippincott, one of the women who worked at the Canteen. Hear her share her stories and passion about the Canteen
