City Labor Agreement Negotiations Wrap Up and Head to City Council for Consideration

Grand Island, Neb. — The City of Grand Island is pleased to announce that the labor agreement negotiation process between the city and all seven city unions is now complete.

Three labor agreements for employees represented by Local No. 1597, I.B.E.W., A.F.L-C.I.O. (IBEW), will be presented to City Council for action at the next regularly scheduled council meeting on Tuesday, October 11, at 7 p.m.  Employees from the Finance Department, Utilities Department, and Wastewater Treatment Plant are covered under these agreements.

City Administrator Mary Lou Brown said, “I am very appreciative of the diligent efforts of all parties involved with the labor agreement negotiation process and the timeliness of resolution of the completed contracts.”

Mayor Jay Vavricek stated, "Hats off to the city's negotiating team, in concert with city council involvement, along with valued city employees. It has been critical to complete countless hours of work over the past several weeks to finally present to council the last three of seven labor agreements. Again, a sign of progress. Thank you to all involved.”

Union membership makes up approximately 74 percent of the city’s workforce. The city's negotiating team was led by City Administrator Mary Lou Brown, Human Resource Director Brenda Sutherland and City Attorney Robert Sivick.
