Federal Aid Transportation Project
Project Description
This project will construct 20 Historical Street Lights one block west, one block east and one half block south of the KC Plaza at 3rd Street and Wheeler Avenue. The purpose of the project is to revitalize and preserve historical Downtown Grand Island, and to provide adequate lighting for pedestrians and motorists. The design of the street lighting poles and luminaires is based on other historical lights located in Grand Island’s Downtown.
The brick paver strip along the public sidewalk in the project corridor will also be replaced to upgrade walkway conditions and embellish the historical appearance. Adjacent deteriorated sidewalk will also be replaced at some locations.
This project is made possible through funds provided by the Nebraska Department of Roads Transportation Enhancement Program and the Federal Highway Administration. The Downtown Business Improvement District will provide the local matching funds (20%) through their revenues and through funding awarded by the Community Redevelopment Authority.
Plans and Specifications were developed by Olsson Associates of Grand Island. Olsson Associates will also assist in oversight of the construction of the project.
The $226,719.40 contract to construct the improvements was awarded to Mid-Plains Power of Grand Island, Nebraska on July 9, 2013.
