Gate Valve at UV Diversion Replacement

The Grand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant varies its operation seasonally to account for changes in temperature.  During the summer, effluent out of the final clarifiers is diverted through an array of UV lamps which treat wastewater by inactivating pathogens (viruses, bacteria, etc.).  However, during the winter, the water temperature is too low for the vast majority of pathogens so the UV lamps are bypassed.  The gate valve, originally installed in 1995, became severely corroded and required replacement.  The corrosion allowed untreated effluent to leak into an adjacent utility ditch.  This project replaced the damaged valve with one that is more resistant to corrosion.

On July 12, 2022 Grand Island City Council approved the purchase of a stainless steel slide gate from Vessco, Inc. of Chanhassen, Minnesota in the amount of $9,295.20.
