Residential
How do we mitigate FOG clogs in the residential setting?
Cool it, can it, trash it! Transfer FOG into a throwaway container like a spaghetti sauce jar or an empty coffee can. Trash the container after using it.
Scrape food scraps off dishes, cookware, and utensils into the trash before washing. After that, use a paper towel to dry wipe away any leftovers.
If you are using large quantities of oil, combine it with a disposable, absorbent substance to solidify it (Coffee grounds or cat litter can work!). Put the material that has been drenched with grease (once solidified) in the trash.
Avoid degreasers and cleaning products. These degreasers liquify the FOG for a short while, but eventually it recongeal as a solid, which blocks the flow further down the line.
In the laundry room, bathroom, and kitchen, place strainers over the drains. Regularly clean them, and put anything that was caught in the garbage.
How to Prevent Pipe Clogs from FOGS
Cool - Allow oil to cool - No-one needs any hot oil making a mess!
Pour! - Pour your oil in a sealable container (Use an absorbent material such as cat litter, coffee grounds, baking soda or commercial grease solidifier in the container to prevent potential messes!)
Wipe/Scrape - Scrape or wipe any residual so the pot or pan is as oil - free and solids-free as you can get it before washing in the sink!
Trash - Throw away seleable container in the trash once it's full
